The year 1361 is stated as the time when the village of Val was first mentioned in writing. The village lies at the foot of the Orlické Mountains at an elevation of 355 meters. It has two parts – formerly two small villages – Val and Provoz, separated by the Val Valley. And that is where you will find “Ondřejcův mlýn“ (Ondřejc’s Mill), which was built in the 15th century and in which the Ondřejc family lived and worked for more than 200 years. What makes the valley so charming are some more mills, nowadays turned into cottages used as holiday homes. There is a cycling trail that will take you though the valley, the most attractive place of this area, and which forms a link between Dobruška and the Orlické Mountains. On your bicycle you can also ride to Nové Město nad Metují, which is not far. The valley itself is a popular place all year round for nature walks. In the summer, you can see a performance in the open-air theatre where performances have been given for 60 years. Every summer there are regular programmes, a festival and competition of folk and country-style music called “Orlické ozvěny“ (Orlické Echoes), and the highly popular and successful festival of brass bands, “Valský dechový festival“ –or VAL-DECH-FEST – and an inspiring gathering of young composers and interpreters, festival of alternative culture called the “Babylon“. Both locals and visitors can spend a pleasant summer Sunday afternoon watching theatre performances. The cultural summer programme is closely connected with the local society, “Beseda Val“. The village fairytale patron is the Frontier Guardian, a man who lights the watch fire, determined to defend his post. He evokes in us respect for our predecessors, their courage and bravery. It was not an easy life at the guardian’s post, one needed courage to bring his family and settle in the, in those times, wild country. You will never get bored in Val. Come and see for yourself.val
